Default Skycars, just in time for Xmas

CHICAGO (Reuters) - If that Hummer is draining your cash at the gas pump, Neiman Marcus Group Inc. has the perfect holiday gift: A fuel-efficient, $3.5 million "Skycar" that flies 350 miles per hour and burns environmentally friendly alcohol.

The luxury retailer's annual Christmas Book of gifts for the rich and richer shows no signs of scaling back in times of economic strain -- although there are a few stocking stuffers such as a $15 paperweight for those on a tighter budget.

The M400 Skycar prototype is a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that gets 21 miles per gallon and is designed to be "as safe, affordable and easy to use as an automobile.

"A limited number of M400s is expected to be available within the next three years, but you can purchase the actual prototype for yourself or your favorite commuter now," Neiman Marcus said in the catalog.

Delivery is not included.

I have been excited about the moller sky car for a long time

I have been getting weary though of all the hype and them having nothing but one prototype that has never even done a full flight

There are some pics of this thing here and here.

That gas mileage is pretty impressive. I really dig the levitating sculpture, too. But $18,000 for the 16-inch version? Surely somebody could make something similar for less than that. I guess you could say that about a lot of the stuff in Neiman Marcus, though. But it seems like all of the magnetic levitation stuff I see is in those stores at the mall that sell sciencey stuff, and they're meant to demonstrate a scientific principle instead of being works of art.[/url]

Is it possible the skycar is finally going to be built in China?

Moller says they want to make the cars fully automatic... Just put in the GPS location and off you go.

i'm all about that.

being able to do shit in the car on the way to work would be awesome, as long as it doesn't bitch or warn me excessively about disabling the autopilot.

it's bad enough there are cars that have perma-on traction control.
