Default Call of Apathy: Violent Young Men and Our Place in War

http://www.mediumdifficulty.com/2012...-place-in-war/

I found this article to be kind of interesting.

I'd have trouble really believing that such a high percentage of soldiers are sociopaths or have violent personality disorders.

But, I do know that war really fucks people up, and I wish we were not so willing to put people through this sort of thing.

That was a good article. It's sad though. War is glorified in just about everything.

I don't have a problem seeing that actually. I think a soldier's life attracts people with personality disorders, as do certain other jobs, like police officers. Many countries have mandatory service, so I think in those countries you would see a lot less personality disorders cause you are getting a general sample. Also, joining the military can be an out for people who have issues dealing with people in normal society. This is the down side to having an all volunteer military. The people who are attracted to such a life are often disparate and poor and sometimes have major issues like the guy in the article talks about.

Most of my friends who've joined did it either because they like the idea of being a "hero" or they dropped out, aren't going to college, and think there's nothing else for them to do with their lives.

Yeah I think a lot of poor people join just because they feel their is no alternative for them.
In fact, you find that in poor areas a lot more people are recruited than from other areas.

Ya, I like to suggest job corp instead but no one wants to do it because they drug test because you know....drugs are more important than school/jobs/your future.

The military doesn't drug test?

I'm not sure, but I feel like if they did it'd be when you sign up or something. Job corp drug tests like once a month of something because of all the things they do for you. Like they even give you money for clothes and housing.

Yeah several of my friends did job corps. It didn't really get them anywhere though.

Really? I know maybe one or two and after their training they helped them get a job and everything. They're doing great now.
