Default Tropes vs Women in Video Games

Quote:
ABOUT THE VIDEO SERIES
The Tropes vs Women in Video Games project aims to examine the plot devices and patterns most often associated with female characters in gaming from a systemic, big picture perspective. This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of it's more problematic or pernicious aspects.

This is the first in the series (two parter about the Damsel in Distress trope).

I'm surprised at how much hate she has received for this video. It's obviously true. I'm already seeing a lot of video game apologetics. I think people take this stuff a little too personally. The point isn't that games are bad or that gaming is bad. It's about consciousness awareness and realizing that more and more women are gaming, and we should consider that when we build games. There should be strong female characters to go along with the male ones. I don't think it's asking for much.

That's exactly what the problem is - people go to the extreme and think she's bashing video games as a whole, when she's not actually bashing anything at all. Then you have these guys who do nothing but say shit like "Well what about the GUYS in these games that are kidnapped blah blah". Except, that's not a trope. It's a very small, random occurrence... and she even goes into the whole thing about when male characters are 'kidnapped' etc they get out of said situation normally entirely on their own, while the female characters are left totally helpless.

Yeah. I've come in to conflict with a well known YouTuber over this. I'll let you know how that goes lol.

I think the only game I can think of off the top of my head with a non sexualized female lead who can escape from her own predicament is Portal 1 and 2..

*Technically* most of the newer games that allow you to make your own character design is similar in that aspect as well (Most of the RPGs by Bethesda or Bioware come to mind first and foremost). I'm very much loving the angle that these video games are taking us, I just wish it was more common.

Yes.. some are getting good about that.
I just remembered when I played Deus Ex: Invisible War, you can choose to be male or female and the name stays the same as "Alex" They recorded separate voices for each and I thought that was nice.

But then in Human Revolution, you can only play as a guy.
