So are the tube sites actually turning a profit or are they just used as advertisement by the big porn companies? Other articles I've read show huge declines in profit margins and talent pay. I know 10-15 years ago a solo model could make her own website her career but I get the feeling that isn't happening now.

The tube sites are actually making quite a bit of money
Mostly from referrals to cam & dating sites which can often pay $100+ for each new member that is referred.

Secondary is advertising for some of the big companies.
But for the most part everyone else is getting screwed.

I am not blaming the tube site for the fall of the industry. I think its a sort of combination of things. In the earlier days of online porn because it was so profitable, it also encouraged a lot of people to scam customers. Lots of sites promised lured people in with "free trials" and then made it difficult to cancel and racked up all kinds of charges on their card. Once a person gets ripped off like that, they are very wary of ever signing up for a porn site again.

That along with the general trend for content of all sorts to be free, combined with falling costs for everything from cameras to bandwidth and talent.. I think all of that just made tube sites inevitable.

Additionally, I feel that the general trend is that porn is just becoming something people do rather than something people produce and sell. People make their own porn videos and photos and share them.
If all the studios and all the websites went out of business today. There would still be tons and tons of new porn uploaded every day by people who just want to make it and share it with no expectation of getting money for it.
